Snacks and your weight-loss plan

If you’re trying to lose weight, you may be focusing on restricting how much—and how often—you eat. After all, eating fewer calories and burning more is the secret to weight loss success, right? Well, yes. But losing weight doesn’t have to mean giving up snacks between meals.

Healthy snacks may actually help you achieve your weight loss goals. Well-planned snacks can help stave off hunger and prevent you from overeating at your next meal. The key is to focus on healthy snacks and still watch your calorie intake.

Choosing the Right Snacks

If you find yourself hungry before it’s time for your next meal, choose healthy snacks that will actually satisfy your hunger and boost your energy. Stick with snacks that contain 100 or fewer calories and you should be able to stay within your daily calorie goal. Some healthy snack options include:

  • Fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are loaded with fiber, which will help you feel full for a longer period of time. They also contain a lot of water, which means you’re getting fewer calories in each satisfying bite.
  • Whole grains. Whole grains are also rich in fiber to help you feel full. In addition, they contain complex carbohydrates that will give you an energy boost without the crash associated with simple sugars.
  • Nuts and seeds. Nuts and seeds are good sources of protein, which is the best for making you feel full for longer. Although nuts and seeds can be high in fat, it’s mostly the monounsaturated, “good” fat that your body needs. However, nuts and seeds do tend to have a high energy density, so eating too many can really add up the calories. Stick with a handful to hold you over until your next meal.
  • Low-fat dairy products. Low-fat cheeses and yogurts are good sources of calcium and protein. It’s important to choose low-fat and sugar-free varieties if you’re trying to watch your calorie count.

As with all of your food choices, snacking while managing your weight is a matter of proper planning and practicing moderation and balance.
