Sun Safety Tips
Protecting your skin from the sun can help you look younger for longer, but don’t forget about taking care of skin that’s still naturally young! Follow these tips to protect your children from dangerous UV rays.
Sun Safety Tips For Kids:
Use plenty of sunscreen: Most people only use about half as much sunscreen as they should. Covering a child’s body should require about one ounce of sunscreen lotion, roughly the equivalent of what would fit in a shot glass.
Apply sunscreen before you go out into the sun: If you’re heading to the beach or pool, lather everyone up before leaving home. The best time to apply sunscreen is 15-30 minutes before exposure. You’ll then want to reapply every 2 hours or after swimming or excessive sweating.
Get skin checks: A pediatrician should examine your child’s skin once a year to get a baseline of skin condition. If you or your child’s doctor notice unusual spots, you may need to see a dermatologist for further examination.
Use sleeves, hats and sunglasses: Keeping young skin out of direct sunlight is the best way to protect children from sun damage. Concerned about a vitamin D deficiency? Our bodies only need about 10 minutes of sunlight each day for vitamin D production, and foods fortified with vitamin D can ensure you’re family is getting the vitamins and minerals they need.
