What Is Aerobic Training?

Regular aerobic exercise is a great addition to a fitness routine. This type of exercise strengthens the heart and cardiovascular system. It also burns calories and helps tone muscles. You don’t necessarily have to join an aerobics class to get this type of exercise. Things such as walking, running and swimming can all be considered “aerobic”. How can you tell if an exercise is aerobic or not? Some of the markers include continuous movement and the use of large muscle groups. Aerobic exercise is also typically rhythmic in nature.

If you aren’t currently participating in an aerobic training program, it is an important fitness aspect to add to your physical activity list. Even steady walking is aerobic, and it can be a great way to get started. For best results, make sure you have proper shoes for the activity you will be participating in (unless it is swimming), and dress comfortably.

Proper hydration is important as well. If you will be doing your aerobic activity outdoors in the summer, try to choose a time where you will not be too warm (dawn or dusk) or exercise in the shade. If you are going to be outside in the winter, layering your clothing is a smart idea. After all, being comfortable can help increase the amount of time you are willing to participate in these types of aerobic activity.
